When I was pregnant, I looked at my second-time-mum mates as if they were mamma veterans. They seemed so secure and sorted, while I was utterly clueless. Admittedly the latter is true, I was clueless. But I’ve since come to realise that even second-time mums need a little TLC, which is why baby showers shouldn’t just be reserved for the newbies. I was a little apprehensive… ok terrified about giving birth. In between ‘anecdotes’ from my friends about their own scary experiences, and a few too many episodes of Call The Midwife, I was petrified of everything from what ‘might’ go wrong to whether we’d make it to the hospital in time. As it turned out my birth experience was wonderful. Of course, it’s natural to be scared though, which is why I’ve put together a list of eight common labour fears, and called on the help of respected Dubai-based Consultant OB/GYN Dr. Elsa de Menezes Fernandes to lay them to rest.
I’ve always been a huge fan of Stokke, from their iconic Tripp Trapp chair to their beautiful Xplory stroller, their enduring and practical pieces are designed to stand the test of time. And none more so than the gorgeous new range, Stokke Home. Pegged as ‘the small nursery with big possibilities’, the Stokke Home concept centers around modularity. The idea is that each piece is adaptable and alters to suit your living space and the changing needs of your child. Basically, as your little one grows from a newborn into a toddler and from a toddler into a young child, the pieces grow with them.
I recently reached the six-month mark in my breastfeeding journey. It was a big day because there was a time when I didn’t think I would make six days. Somewhere between sleep deprivation, a bout of mastitis and a tongue-tied infant, I almost gave up a number of times. Fortunately I persevered and I’m so thankful that I did. From those middle-of-the-night feeds, when it felt as though Baby Boo and I were literally the only people in the world, to those special moments when she paused mid way to smile at me, I feel truly privileged to have experienced this relationship with her. But it’s not just the sense of bonding that I’ve found enchanting. From its ability to treat eye infections to being a new mum’s miracle calorie burner, breast milk really is magical. So, in honour of World Breastfeeding Week, I’ve put together a list the colossal benefits, and a few quirky facts, I’ve discovered about mother’s milk. Continue reading
In honour of World Breastfeeding Week, we’ve teamed up with Mii Baby, to offer six lucky winners a Mii Innovatus Double Breast Pump, worth Dhs1,795 each. The Batmobile of the nursing world, the Innovatus has a whopping nine settings for suction velocity and intensity, and comes equipped with a timer and pressure sensor, which allows mum to find settings that reproduce her little one’s nursing habits. Another great feature is the one-size-fits-all cups, which are made from 100 percent food-grade silicone. Designed to massage the breast area, rather than pull on the nipple, these cups help to stimulate the production of oxytocin, which is the hormone responsible for your letdown reflex. Continue reading
