I consider myself to be a fairly rational and levelheaded person, but from the moment those two blue lines came into my life, I obsessed about everything from maternity wear to miscarriage, and everything in between. When I was awake at 4am fixating on whether a bag of Cheetos could cause listeria I questioned my own sanity, but I’ve since come to realise that there are a lot of things pregnant women worry about. However, while some fears may be warranted, there are definitely a few irrational ones. Here are just some of the things you’ve probably found yourself fretting over during pregnancy.
Things pregnant women worry about #1: I’m not pregnant
You peed on a stick and your life changed for ever. When put like that it’s hardly surprising that so many women worry that the entire pregnancy is little more than a figment of the imagination. There’s not really much you can do about this one except wait it out until your first ultrasound, because it’s true what they say, seeing that heartbeat for the first time makes it all very real.
Things pregnant women worry about #2: Losing the baby
Yes, it’s a scary thought, but bear in mind that the odds are stacked in your favour. For women younger than 35, it’s 10 to 12 percent, while for 35- to 39-year-olds, it’s 18 percent. It does rise to 34 percent for women 40 to 44 years old, but try to remember that a large number of pregnancy losses happen in early pregnancy, so if you’ve made it to the second trimester, you’re on safe ground.
Things pregnant women worry about #3: I’ll eat something that’ll hurt the baby
Worrying that you’ll accidentally eat something that will harm your baby is a very common fear. However, aside from things like raw meat, seafood and unpasteurised milk or cheese, there aren’t too many food items that have the potential to cause harm. The main thing is that you have a balanced and healthy diet and that you’re aware of what’s in your food before you eat it.
Things pregnant women worry about #4: I won’t be able to cope with a newborn
Round-the-clock feeds and never-ending nappy changes… yup, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed at the thought of caring for a newborn. However, just like pregnancy, you’ll very quickly adapt to this new phase in your life.
Things pregnant women worry about #5: I’ll go into labour in public
It always makes the headlines when a woman delivers on a bus or in a toilet cubicle, but in real-life, it’s extraordinarily rare. The bottom line is, it’s called labour for a reason, it takes time, so the chances are you’ll get a heads up well in advance. Click here for signs baby is on the way.
Things pregnant women worry about #6: I won’t feel attractive anymore
Oh yes you will. To put things in perspective, even the singer Shakira said she worried she might lose her sexiness after pregnancy, so you’re definitely not alone with this one.
Things pregnant women worry about #7: I’ll become a baby bore
You know that friend you politely set to ‘hide’ because she wouldn’t stop littering your news feed with pictures of her baby? Well, you might want to chuck a couple of ‘likes’ her way, because you’ll probably be baby spamming with the best of them in due course. But don’t worry. For every friend who quietly avoids your status updates, they’ll be dozens who’ll be overjoyed to see your little one in various beguiling poses.
Things pregnant women worry about #5: Not being able to lose the baby weight. Ever.
You’ve probably heard this one a million times before, but it never gets old. If it took nine months to put the weight on, you can’t expect it to disappear overnight, so chill out. Then, when you’re ready to tackle your post-baby body, click here for tips on how to get post-pregnancy fit.
