When I was pregnant everyone kept telling me, ‘get your sleep now!’ But in between heartburn and restless leg syndrome I was running on about three hours sleep a night for the majority of my pregnancy. While for now those days are behind me, I have a gaggle of girlfriends who are all experiencing pregnancy-related sleep problems. In honour of them, I’ve put together this list of common pregnancy sleep problems, along with expert tips on how to solve them.
One of the best – and worst – things about pregnancy is all the random food cravings. During my first few months nausea really knocked it out of me and the only way to combat the problem was to give in to all my cravings, which included everything from cheese-stuffed pretzels to spicy Cheetos and chocolate ice cream. While I enjoyed this period of excess, I was somewhat relieved by month five when my normal, healthier, appetite returned. After all, while cravings are completely natural, you have to set reasonable limits because the more weight you gain in these nine months, the harder it will be to stabilise it later. I’m rocketing towards my due date now and I don’t mind saying, the prospect that life will never be the same again is starting to give me the heebie jeebies. In honour of all the mum-to-bes out there who are feeling apprehensive about how life will change come D Day, I’ve put together this list of fun things to do before your baby arrives.
Fruits of the forest smoothie
Since reaching my third trimester my appetite has gone into overdrive. After a full nights sleep I’m ravenous in the mornings, which has lead to a breakfast obsession. However, it’s got to be delicious, filling and ready in less than five minutes, otherwise I begin tearing apart the kitchen with abandon. Fortunately I have my Mum Cook Book by Beaba and Beaba Babycook Solo on hand, which contains recipes for women during pregnancy. One morning while frantically flicking through the pages I came across a recipe for fruits of the forest smoothie and it has become my new morning mania. Sucking down one of these awesome fruity smoothies gets my motor running and the best part is it’s ready in a matter of minutes. Surprisingly thick it’s almost like drinking a shake (but not as sweet) and it keeps me full until lunchtime.
